This process starts with the Simple thermostat taking in several data streams that form the baseline of its learning. Once Simple has learned enough from this data (usually a few weeks), it can begin to make micro-adjustments to your thermostat performance, imperceptible to the average person, but helping keep you comfortable and save you money.
It can be difficult to sort through savings claims. A generation ago, it was said that programmable thermostats saved energy, but that was only true for people that programmed them. And few did. Today, Wi-Fi thermostats offer an app for control, but it takes a smart thermostat to create new opportunities for energy savings.
Even when comparing smart thermostats, there are wide ranges of savings claims because the reports cited have very different approaches to measuring savings. Some have thus resorted to requiring specific features as a standard for “smart.”
Energy Star is among the most trusted brands in the world when it comes to qualifying the energy efficiency of products, and that’s why it was critical when they created a standard for connected thermostats in 2017. For the first time ever, Energy Star required not just product features, and lab testing of device performance, but field savings data that proves the thermostat is saving. Manufacturers had to prove their devices saved money by offering anonymized deployment data across all US climate regions.
Even more, this data has to be resubmitted in an ongoing way, to show that the product continues to perform over time.
That’s why simple is proud to be among the first to receive Energy Star certification. Without a doubt, Simple saves.
We get it, you’re busy, and the last thing you want is a “smart” device that requires an engineering degree to manage. That’s why we’ve tried to make the Simple as easy as possible to control.
On the device itself, we’ve made an easy 5-button design. Change temperatures using up or down buttons. Set away mode with a single button press. The device shows you indoor, outdoor and set-to temperature at all times.
The Simple app aims to be, well, simple. On the left side of the screen, you see indoor and outdoor temperatures. On the right side of the screen, you see your target or set-to temperature, and until when that temperature is scheduled. Drag the target temperature to change it.
When Simple’s learning algorithms have made a temperature change, you’ll see the leaf image on the thermostat and the word “Eco” at the bottom of the target temperature circle.
If you left and didn’t set the away mode, it is only one button click away. And the Simple always shows you the impact of your actions in our savings reports.
